NecronomiCon Dinner With Lovecraftians

The first event that really let us know NecronomiCon Providence was getting into full swing was the dinner at McCormack and Schmick’s restaurant on the ground floor of the Biltmore Hotel, where most of us were staying. A few of us casually clowned-around in the hotel lobby, and Tom Lynch started murmuring about dinner.

In the first photo, Tom Lynch(L) and Mike Davis (R) get ready to rassle in the foreground, while behind them Peter Rawlik and Joe Pulver enter into a tender embrace.

If you were within range of my camera at this moment, that meant you were cool enough to be invited to McCormack and Schmick’s by Tom Lynch of Miskatonic River Press, fine publisher of such tomes as The Grimscribe’s Puppets, A Season in Carcosa, and more. Tom’s treat!

Let the following image serve as proof of the deep silliness on display among this crowd. Lady Lovecraft appears in the background here.

We managed to persuade this nice restaurant to give a large table to a bunch of roughnecks and buffoons. They even treated us like normal patrons.

In the next picture, Sam Cowan (L) displays his copy of The Grimscribe’s Puppets, opposite me, uploading photos from my phone, while in the background Boss Tom Lynch and bEast Pulver tell Sam “what’s what” as far as that Grimscribe’s book. Sitting between Sam and Tom is David Rankus.

At this stage, Sam is talking about possibly getting some writers to sign the book.

I mentioned I’d never signed a book before, which provoked a bit of discussion, mockery, amazement, etc. I ended up signing many books over the weekend (not sure how many — a few dozen at least) but Sam Cowan received the first. See inscription below.

I joked with him that if — when! — I’m hugely famous, the book will be worth $8 million, and he’ll be especially glad he attended this dinner!

Lady Lovecraft took this photo across the table — so you can’t see her, but that’s Blair Leggett and Sam Cowan.

Also present… Cthulhu himself!

This video, provided by Mike Davis of Lovecraft eZine, gives a good idea of the zany atmosphere. They’re trying to convince Cthulhu to eat one of his own distant relatives.

Mike also took this picture from his end of the table, primarily focusing on the back of Peter Rawlik’s head, and Mike’s own empty seat.

On the left, that’s Vince LaRosa and Blair Leggett. Behind Blair you can almost see Sam’s red shirt.

At the head of the table is the Boss, the Man, the Honcho… Tom Lynch.

On the right, Lady Lovecraft has her head turned, then Lena, then me, then Jeffrey Thomas.

Dinner was very good, if a bit excessive. Tom told the waiter which appetizers interested us, and allowed said waiter to decide what quantity of appetizers was appropriate for a table of our size. I think we ended up with 15 or more appetizers… a bit much! The bacon-wrapped shrimp were damn good, though, and I’m always fond of crab cakes and calamari.

Very fine company, a tons of fun. Our sincere thanks to Tom Lynch and Miskatonic River Press for making this happen, bringing us all together, and footing the sizable bill!

Super Concise Writing Tip

Today’s super concise writing tip:

Don’t just tell the reader what happened.

Convey to the reader the sensory experience or emotional impact of what happened.

“Good writing is supposed to evoke sensation in the reader — not the fact that it is raining, but the feeling of being rained upon.”
― E.L. Doctorow

Reading Between Greats

This morning Lena and I attended an early reading by Joe Pulver and Laird Barron, two of my favorite writers. Joe had hinted yesterday that he had a “surprise” planned, so Scott Nicolay and I definitely couldn’t miss it.

After Joe read his story, a “Mountains of Madness” tribute bound for an upcoming S.T. Joshi anthology, he revealed the surprise. He and Laird had arranged in advance to leave a gap of time so Scott and I could both read briefly in between them. Joe handed me his copy of The Grimscribe’s Puppets, and I went first.

After a brief, fumbling intro (I figured this was necessary because most of the audience had no idea who I am), I read about the first third of “Diamond Dust.” It seemed to go very well, and people applauded, and many said nice things afterward.

I’ll have more to say about it later, but that was a major highlight for me so far. I really owe major thanks to Joe and Laird for giving me and Scott this boost.

Recent Blog Posts

Usually I keep my WordPress and Livejournal and Dreamwidth blogs synchronized, so everybody can see everything I post, even if they prefer to just follow one blog platform. My reasons for doing this seem to be diminishing, as the number of people following Livejournal seems to be dwindling to almost nothing… but still, I don’t want to tell people they can follow my blog in any of the three channels and not miss anything, unless it’s true.

My last half dozen or so blog posts ended up being posted only to WordPress, so I’m going to post those to Livejournal and Dreamwidth now.

During the period in question, I posted my multi-part “con report” for the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival. These posts were by far the most widely-shared and heavily-viewed of anything I’ve ever posted.

Maybe some of you missed these and will enjoy them, even though they cover events from the beginning of May.

“Arches and Pillars” to appear in Black Static issue #34, May 2013

I’ve been given the go-ahead to announce that my story “Arches and Pillars” will appear in BLACK STATIC magazine issue #34, May 2013.
If it’s unfamiliar to some of you… BLACK STATIC is a British magazine of horror and dark fantasy. Ellen Datlow called it “The most consistently excellent horror magazine published,” and her BEST HORROR OF THE YEAR consistently includes several pieces from this periodical.
Wonderful first-thing-in-the-morning news! My gushing, effusive thanks to editor Andy Cox. http://ttapress.com/blackstatic

WordPress and Tumblr and Twitter

Too many blogs and social media… I’ll admit it! Also I’m guilty of posting about fiction writing on the Hypnos feed, and ambient music on the Griffinwords blog, getting everything all mixed up.

I’m going to make a better effort to keep these things straight, though the inevitable crosstalk will occur.

My primary fiction-related blog, for both my own writing and reviews of the writing of others, will be griffinwords.wordpress.com — posts to this blog will crosspost to griffinwords.tumblr.com and twitter.com/griffinwords

For at least a while, these will also crosspost to griffinwords.dreamwidth.org and griffinwords.livejournal.com and probably also the twitter.com/mgsoundvisions feed. Kind of a mess, I know. Still working on streamlining.

Nectar of Strange Lips Coming Soon From Lovecraft Ezine

I’ve just been told that my story “Nectar of Strange Lips” will appear in the March issue of Lovecraft eZine later this month! My friends Joe Pulver and Edward Morris have a collaborative tale in the same issue, too. And of course the Lovecraft eZine is always overflowing with awesome stuff.

I’ll post a link when it actually appears but in case you want to check it out in advance, here you go: http://lovecraftzine.com
