2015 Favorite Reads – The Incoming Tide by Cameron Pierce

The Incoming Tide by Cameron Pierce is one of my favorite reads of 2015 in the Collections category. This is such an unusual book, both refreshingly simple and affectingly, surprisingly deep. It combines very short stories, poems and prose poems in a little slip of a volume, easily read in one setting. But the size of The Incoming Tide is no indication at all of how much wisdom, perspective and emotion it contains.

On Goodreads I said:
A charming, wonderfully sensitive and mature collection of poems and very short stories about fishing, rivers, beer and life. I loved every page of this.

2015 Favorite Reads – We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

I’m going to kick off my “Favorite Reads of 2015” series with the oldest book to make the list. One of my favorite reads of 2015 in the “earlier books I first read in 2015” category was We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson.

For some reason, I thought I had read this before… maybe because I’ve seen so many people talk about it. After a few pages, I was wonderfully pleased to discover this was actually unknown territory, and I was in for a first reading of a book that I ended up loving like mad. Shirley Jackson is just so, so damn good! The slow reveal of past events that led up to the family’s situation at the beginning of the novel is one of the most delicious things I’ve ever read.

Much as I also love The Haunting of Hill House, I could see myself revisiting We Have Always Lived in the Castle even more frequently. This is one of the best and most memorable books I’ve encountered in the past five years.

Favorite Books of 2015

Every year I like to do a list of my favorite books from the year just finished. This seems like a good way to help spread the word about books I considered deserving of more attention.

At the moment I have a limited amount of free time, but I still want to do something like this. I’m going to try commenting one book at a time (and in some cases doing little more than quoting my own GoodReads review), stretching out over the next few weeks, mixed in with other blog posts.

My general idea is to highlight three favorites among those categories:

2015 Novels
2015 Collections
2015 Anthologies
Earlier Books Read in 2015

The Lure of Devouring Light: Four Blurbs

Many writers say they hate the process of trying to ask for “blurbs” (the trade nickname for little bits of promotional text offered in support of a book). I understand that it’s no fun to ask somebody for a favor, especially when you’re afraid that just to ask might be an imposition on someone you respect.

I’m very lucky to have found four brilliant people, some of my favorite writers, who were willing to read my first book and say flattering things about it. Here are the advance blurbs for The Lure of Devouring Light:

“Mike Griffin skillfully works the rich seams of quiet horror and contemporary weird. The Lure of Devouring Light is a superb selection of strange stories. It’s the kind of debut that should command attention from genre fans and critics.”
–Laird Barron, author of The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All

“Michael Griffin’s fiction is sleekly poetic, disorienting, light and fierce. With this debut collection, Griffin establishes himself as a writer of already matured sensibilities, fiercely dedicated to the exploration of pain. Merciless.”
–Michael Cisco, author of Animal Money

“Often, Mike Griffin’s stories isolate an extraordinary dynamic between individuals who can only sustain the strange world they inhabit, secretly and together, with abject devotion to it. Anything short of passion will cause a rift in the narrative they’ve created, disclosing uncertainty, selfishness, ambition. Opening old wounds, or asking new questions. (For example, is love worthwhile or even possible set against a natural environment we’ve degraded beyond recognition? Or, what kind of integrity will we maintain if the monsters come for us?) At his finest moments Griffin achieves either a luminous grace or a breathtaking plummet into the unknown. In both cases the shock is earned by the tale that precedes it, and the stakes are as high as they can get. What I admire most (and there is plenty to admire in his writing) is an unforced, elegant ability to make his characters matter to us, in all their preening desire and almost magical expressions, like people we’ve known, loved, and left behind when all the bad shit happened—but with deep regret.”
–S.P. Miskowski, author of the Skillute Cycle

“The focus in these stories is often on relationships that cause the characters to analyze how they intersect with the lives of others, and to contemplate their lives as individual beings—these examinations reflected outwardly in an environment of nightmarish disorientation and dreamlike transformation. This is dark fiction of a rare literary refinement, crystalline and poetic, that never sacrifices the frisson of the weird and horrifying. A highly impressive collection.”
–Jeffrey Thomas, author of Punktown

Often I have learned about interesting new writers from the recommendations of fellow writers. I don’t know to what degree this holds true for others, whether blurbs effectively convince others to read a book, or maybe they’re just something to make the author and publisher feel better. Whatever the case, I’m very flattered to have received votes of confidence from writers like Laird Barron, Michael Cisco, S. P. Miskowski and Jeffrey Thomas, and I thank them for their time and attention.

The Outer Dark Podcast – News of the Weird

Wednesday night I took part in a group Skype call with The Outer Dark host Scott Nicolay and Justin Steele, who usually joins Scott during the “News of the Weird” segment to end each show. The purpose of my call was to talk a bit about the announcement of my collection, which had happened on the morning of the day our call took place.

If you’re at all interested in The Weird, broadly defined to cover Horror, the traditional Weird Tale, the modern Weird, Bizarro and other associated niches and subgenres, you really out to check out The Outer Dark. For me, it’s been a must-listen since the beginning, with great interviews and appearances from some very interesting writers, editors and artists.

My sincere thanks to Scott and Justin for taking some time to chat about my book, and help spread the word!

Very quickly, the episode was edited and posted online, so it’s already available to listen, for free. The majority of the episode is an interview with Garrett Cook, and Garrett always has interesting thoughts to express, so I’m looking forward to giving this a listen today:

The Lure of Devouring Light Having Been Announced…

Yesterday Word Horde announced the planned release of my collection The Lure of Devouring Light for this April. Yesterday it became official, and known to many.

I’ve known this was a “done deal” for quite some time, and didn’t for a moment doubt that Ross E. Lockhart would do what he said he would do… and yet, yesterday’s announcement was a relief to me, as well as a cause for excitement, for several reasons.

There was the obvious pride and pleasure of seeing the announcement met with interest and enthusiasm. Hey, people want to see my book when it comes out! Some people are even pre-ordering it without having seen the cover.

There was relief at being able to stop keeping the secret, especially from people I thought might be interested to hear it. Last October, Orrin Grey visited Portland for the occasion of his book release (Painted Monsters, which came out on Word Horde), which coincided with the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival. Orrin stayed the night before the HPLFF began at our house. Lena and I and Orrin had a nice time, chatting at the Edgefield about horror movies. I wanted to tell Orrin “Hey, guess what? Looks like we’re going to share a publisher,” but the deal wasn’t final yet and I didn’t want to go around talking it up prematurely.

There was the realization that now I get to share the wonderfully flattering blurbs I’ve received from four of my favorite writers. I’ll post these here soon.

There was knowing that I would be seen differently by a lot of people who hadn’t previously read my work, but might now give it a shot, whether because of the endorsement of Word Horde or the kind statements of respected writers in the blurbs I just mentioned. The point of this isn’t “I want to be perceived differently,” but that I hope my work will reach more people in the future, and I think this book will really help that happen.

Yesterday felt like a big deal. It was fun and exciting, and I have the sense the fun is just getting started.

I’ll have lots to say between the time of this announcement and the actual release of the book, so this blog space will be much more active for a while.

Word Horde to Release The Lure of Devouring Light

I will have oh-so-much more to say about this in the coming few months, but for now, I’m pleased to be able to let people know that debut collection The Lure of Devouring Light will be coming in April, 2016 from Word Horde.

I have enormous respect for Editor/Publisher Ross E. Lockhart and what he’s been able to accomplish in the relatively short time Word Horde has been in operation. There is no other publisher I would rather work with on my first book. The cover art is not yet complete, but the book is available for preorder directly from Word Horde, HERE.

Story Acceptance: “The Carnival Arrives in Darkness”

Today’s first piece of good news is that my story “The Carnival Arrives in Darkness” has been accepted by Editor CM Muller for the upcoming second edition of his excellent weird fiction journal, Nightscript.

Debut Collection Announcement Coming Soon

For months I’ve been saying variations on, “I hope to be able to offer news about my debut collection before too much longer.”

That time has not quite arrived, but documents have been signed, and work is moving quickly. I have reason to believe the announcement will be made soon. No hints yet, but I do look forward to the publisher breaking the news so I’ll be free to talk openly about all the details.
