The table of contents starts off with my story “The Carnival Arrives in Darkness,” and continues with a great-looking assortment of writers. I’m very pleased to be connected with this, and October 2016 is the expected release date. My thanks to C.M. Muller, and congratulations on what I expect to be another winner.

The Outer Dark Podcast – News of the Weird

Wednesday night I took part in a group Skype call with The Outer Dark host Scott Nicolay and Justin Steele, who usually joins Scott during the “News of the Weird” segment to end each show. The purpose of my call was to talk a bit about the announcement of my collection, which had happened on the morning of the day our call took place.

If you’re at all interested in The Weird, broadly defined to cover Horror, the traditional Weird Tale, the modern Weird, Bizarro and other associated niches and subgenres, you really out to check out The Outer Dark. For me, it’s been a must-listen since the beginning, with great interviews and appearances from some very interesting writers, editors and artists.

My sincere thanks to Scott and Justin for taking some time to chat about my book, and help spread the word!

Very quickly, the episode was edited and posted online, so it’s already available to listen, for free. The majority of the episode is an interview with Garrett Cook, and Garrett always has interesting thoughts to express, so I’m looking forward to giving this a listen today:

Last Day for Autumn Cthulhu Kickstarter

The Kickstarter for the upcoming Autumn Cthulhu anthology from Lovecraft eZine Press has been a success, having reached the initial goal of $8,000 within four days.

The Kickstarter has gone on to reach the $13,000 stretch goal to include a story by S.P. Miskowski, and most recently the $16,000 stretch goal to include a Robert Levy story. The third and final stretch goal of $19,000, if met, will result in the inclusion of a story by Orrin Grey.

I respect and enjoy the work of all three writers, and really hope the book may be expanded to include all of them.

The official Table of Contents was announced before the Kickstarter, so it does not include names or titles for any of the writers related to the stretch goals, but here’s what’s already included for sure:

Andy Kaufman Creeping Through the Trees – Laird Barron
There is a Bear in the Woods – Nadia Bulkin
Anchor – John Langan
The Stiles of Palemarsh – Richard Gavin
The Night is a Sea – Scott Thomas
In the Spaces Where You Once Lived – Damien Angelica Walters
Trick or the Other Thing – Joseph S. Pulver, Sr.
Grave Goods – Gemma Files
After the Fall – Jeffrey Thomas
A Shadow Passing – Daniel Mills
Lavinia in Autumn – Ann K. Schwader
Memories of the Fall – Pete Rawlik
The Smoke Lodge – Michael Griffin
The End of the Season – Trent Kollodge
The Black Azalea – Wendy Wagner
Cul-De-Sac Virus – Evan Dicken

Of course with two or three new writers/stories included, this sequence will likely change, unless the new additions are just stuck at the end (or beginning), which seems unlikely.

The Kickstarter ends tonight, so time is running out to pledge. Here’s the link:

Kickstarter for Autumn Cthulhu

The upcoming anthology Autumn Cthulhu, edited by Mike Davis and published by Lovecraft eZine Press, is already set to include a great Table of Contents, as follows:

Andy Kaufman Creeping Through the Trees – Laird Barron
There is a Bear in the Woods – Nadia Bulkin
Anchor – John Langan
The Stiles of Palemarsh – Richard Gavin
The Night is a Sea – Scott Thomas
In the Spaces Where You Once Lived – Damien Angelica Walters
Trick or the Other Thing – Joseph S. Pulver, Sr.
Grave Goods – Gemma Files
After the Fall – Jeffrey Thomas
A Shadow Passing – Daniel Mills
Lavinia in Autumn – Ann K. Schwader
Memories of the Fall – Pete Rawlik
The Smoke Lodge – Michael Griffin
The End of the Season – Trent Kollodge
The Black Azalea – Wendy Wagner
Cul-De-Sac Virus – Evan Dicken

The Kickstarter for this book has already been fully funded, so the book is going to happen no matter what, but a couple things are worth pointing out. First, there are some special items available as pledge rewards, some of which may only be available through the Kickstarter. Second, a couple of “stretch goals” have been created. If the Kickstarter reaches $13,000 a story by S.P. Miskowski will be included, and at $16,000 a story by Robert Levy will be in the book as well. These are two great writers and their work couldn’t help but make the book even more special.

If you’d like to contribute to the Kickstarter, or just check out whether it might be of interest, here’s a LINK.

Looking Ahead to NecronomiCon Providence

Now that we’re all recovering from last weekend’s CthulhuCon, it’s natural to begin thinking about upcoming conventions… the next time friends will be able to converge this way.

There’s a good chance I’ll attend ReaderCon in July, and I’m definitely going to NecronomiCon in Providence in August.

necronomicon2015

The current schedule for NecronomiCon is HERE, though it hasn’t yet been updated to reflect the fact that it appears I’ll be participating in at least one panel (a very interesting one, alongside some most excellent fellow panelists) and a reading. I’ll share details once things are a little more certain.

Mythos and Music Panel at CthulhuCon 2015

At the CthulhuCon just completed here in Portland, I moderated a panel called “Mythos and Music.” Panelists left to right included myself (Michael Griffin), Kelly Young, Mike Dalager, Edward Morris and Nathan Carson. It’s already been posted about and discussed at length on Facebook, but I wanted to create a centralized, permanent repository of photos and video, since things tend to become buried on social media after a short time passes.

As may be apparent from this next photo, the panel’s atmosphere was substantially improved and enlivened by Kelly Young’s excellent decision to bring along a bottle of very good whiskey (The Glenlivet 15 Year, for those keeping score at home).

I brought along my laptop to play some MP3s and YouTube music clips provided by the most impressive Nathan Carson. Here’s another angle.

The consensus seems to be that the panel discussion was lively and engaging enough.

Here we have video evidence recorded by my wife, Lena Griffin. It’s presented in three parts. The audio level is a bit low, as it’s recorded on a digital camera from the middle of the audience, but if you work the volume controls a bit, you can hear everything.

PART 2

PART 3

One of the main things people hope to get out of a panel like this, I think, is a list of new music to explore. We mentioned many examples, across a range of genres. I mostly mentioned ambient-related artists, and thought I might include some of those names here for future reference:

Lustmordhttp://www.lustmord.com
A huge influence of mine, and a very important name in dark ambient.

Endvrahttp://www.discogs.com/artist/73040-Endvra
Now inactive, but interesting and worth pursuing, especially Black Eden

Sleep Research Facilityhttp://www.resonance-net.com/
Quite spooky industrial-influenced drone ambient. One of my favorites.

During the panel I failed to mention Igneous Flame, a Lovecraft-influence ambient project of Pete Kelly. Also, check out Kati Astraeir’s very Lovecraftian cover art for the album Orcus! http://igneousflame.bandcamp.com/album/orcus

My thanks to all my fellow panelists, to the audience for their great questions, and to CthulhuCon’s organizers and volunteers for enabling it to happen.
