The Insomniac Who Slept Forever

I hinted at this news on Facebook earlier in the week, and because my hint was such an obvious one, I sort of felt like I had actually announced the news… but not everybody will recognize the meaning of the image I posted, so I should probably make it official.

My story “The Insomniac Who Slept Forever” has been accepted to appear in THE MADNESS OF DR. CALIGARI, an anthology in tribute to the wonderful classic of horror, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The book is being edited by Joseph S. Pulver Sr. and will be published by Fedogan & Bremer an expected release October 2016.

This promises to be a really special book, with some great artists and writers involved. In fact, the other accepted contributors to the Table of Contents so far include many-time winners of all the major awards, writers who’ve been publishing at a high level for many decades. Even the cover artist is a giant in the field of the fantastic. And of course, this publisher always creates editions of beautiful quality.

I can’t wait to see the full Table of Contents, and of course the cover art. When these are available, I’ll post them here. For now, my thanks to Editor Pulver for letting me play a part in this.

Publishers Weekly on The Lure of Devouring Light

“This book is a solid outing from a rising star in horror and dark fantasy.”

So says Publishers Weekly on the subject of my upcoming collection, The Lure of Devouring Light. There’s more, of course. Read the rest HERE.

I consider this review a really great sign of how the book might be received. PW is a very solid, mainstream-oriented periodical, so it’s encouraging that they clearly understood the focus and intent of my work.

If this makes you think maybe you ought to buy this book after all, well then…

Autumn Cthulhu Coming in April

Editor and Publisher Mike Davis of Lovecraft eZine has announced that the much-anticipated, long-awaited anthology AUTUMN CTHULHU will be released in April. Because this was a successful Kickstarter, the first 563 would-be readers have already purchased their copy, but if you didn’t pledge the fundraiser and want a copy, you should be able to pre-order soon.

And because Mike will be in San Pedro for the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival April 29 through May 1, I’m guessing copies of the book will be available there (where you could get signatures from a few of the writers with stories in the book) if not sooner. Can’t wait!

Here’s another look at the cover:

Here’s the ORIGINAL Table of Contents, before the successful Kickstarter stretch goals which added stories by Robert Levy, Orrin Grey and S.P. Miskowski:

Anchor – John Langan
The Stiles of Palemarsh – Richard Gavin
The Night is a Sea – Scott Thomas
In the Spaces Where You Once Lived – Damien Angelica Walters

Lavinia in Autumn – Ann K. Schwader
Memories of the Fall – Pete Rawlik
The Smoke Lodge – Michael Griffin
The End of the Season – Trent Kollodge

I can’t wait to see the finished product, and to check out everyone’s stories. Congratulations to Mike Davis for putting together a great book and a successful fundraiser, and also thanks for letting me be part of it.

Sitting In on The Outer Dark

A couple weeks back, I filled in for Justin Steele on the “News of the Weird” segment in Scott Nicolay’s podcast, The Outer Dark. That episode has just been posted HERE.

outerdark

Originally we expected that episode to be the next one posted after we recorded, but due to a scheduling problem, last week’s episode with Michael Kelly and Kathe Koja (listen HERE) appeared first, despite being recorded a week later.

So, there might be a bit of temporal confusion when last week’s episode refers to this week’s episode in the past tense, but this is a Weird Fiction podcast, so I think listeners will be able to deal with this kind of timeslip. I hope you’ll find both episodes worth a listen. My thanks to Scott for giving me the opportunity to sit in while Justin Steele was out.

Guest Appearance at 2016 HP Lovecraft Film Fest, San Pedro

I’ve previously mentioned in passing, if not on this blog then on Facebook and Twitter, that I’ll be attending the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival in San Pedro, California Friday April 29 through Sunday May 1.

It’s now official. The Kickstarter has been funded, I’ve bought my ticket (and t-shirts and other fun prizes), and booked my hotel room. I’ll definitely be there.

I’ve been added to the GUEST LIST officially, so it looks like I’ll be reading, or panel-ing, or both. April 30 happens to be the release date for my collection THE LURE OF DEVOURING LIGHT, so Ross Lockhart of Word Horde and I will do something or other to celebrate the book release, whether that’s a reading, a signing, or just drinking lots of good beer and shouting about the book at any one who’ll listen.

Even if you didn’t pledge the Kickstarter, you can still buy tickets HERE. You can get a weekend pass, or individual day tickets for Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday. I’ve attended the Portland HPLFF many times, but this will be my first time at the Southern California version. This one should have a lot of great guests, such as Joe Pulver, Mike Davis of Lovecraft eZine, Leeman Kessler of Ask Lovecraft, S.P. Miskowski, Cody Goodfellow, Nick Gucker, Sam Cowan of Dim Shores, and as already mentioned, Ross E. Lockhart of Word Horde. I can’t wait to see so many old friends again, and hope I’ll also get to meet many of my online weird friends for the first time.

What’s Coming Up in 2016?

I just updated the STORIES page of this blog, and it struck me how much work I have coming out the rest of this year. So, if you don’t look at that page, what’s the current outlook for my upcoming work in 2016?

These are in approximately chronological order (though in some cases I’m not exactly sure when a book or magazine will actually appear):

THE LURE OF DEVOURING LIGHT (short fiction collection to be published by Word Horde)
~ FORTHCOMING: April 30, 2016 ~

“The Smoke Lodge” in Autumn Cthulhu, edited by Mike Davis
~ FORTHCOMING: 2016 ~

AN IDEAL RETREAT (chapbook novella to be published by Dim Shores)
~ FORTHCOMING: September 2016 ~

“The Carnival Arrives in Darkness” in Nightscript 2, edited by CM Muller
~ FORTHCOMING: October 2016 ~

“The Human Alchemy” in Eternal Frankenstein, edited by Ross E Lockhart
~ FORTHCOMING: October 2016 ~

“Meriwether” in Darker Companions: Celebrating 50 Years of Ramsey Campbell, edited by Scott David Aniolowski and Joseph S. Pulver Sr.
~ FORTHCOMING: Autumn 2016 ~

“Endure Within a Dying Frame” in Lovecraft eZine
~ FORTHCOMING: 2016 ~

“Miles and Kathrine at the Crimson” in Leaves of a Necronomicon, edited by Joseph S. Pulver Sr.
~ FORTHCOMING: 2016 ~

This represents a total of almost 160,000 words of fiction, and as it’s still possible other work will appear in 2016, this will obviously be my busiest publishing year by a wide margin.

“Meriwether” Will Appear in Ramsey Campbell Tribute

I’m very pleased to receive the news that my story “Meriwether” has been accepted by editors Scott David Aniolowski and Joe Pulver AKA Joseph S. Pulver Sr. for their Ramsey Campbell tribute anthology.

DARKER COMPANIONS: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF RAMSEY CAMPBELL will be published in Autumn 2016 by PS Publishing. I’ve seen a few other writers like S.P. Miskowski, Gary McMahon, Damien Angelica Walters and Jeffrey Thomas mention they’ll be in the book too. The full Table of Contents should be available soon, and I assume we’ll see cover art before too long.

I’m very pleased to have a slot in this one! My thanks to Scott David Aniolowski and Joe Pulver.
